The secret of his first win is, “I want to be a consistent player to improve the accuracy of his tee shot.”
The secret of Moon Jung-min (22)’s first win was to supplement the accuracy of the tee shot.
At the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour’s Daebo Housedy Open (total prize money of 1 billion won) held at Seowon Valley Country Club Valley-Seowon Course in Paju, Gyeonggi Province on the 22nd, Moon Jung-min beat the second-place group by two strokes with a total of 9 under par 207.
It was his first win in three years since his debut in the KLPGA tour. “I can’t believe I won my first championship because I didn’t expect to win,” said Moon Jung-min, who attended the championship press conference after the tournament.
It was his fourth consecutive victory that washed away his poor cut. Moon failed to make the cut in four consecutive competitions since the Hanwha Classic in the second half of the year. “I don’t think things went well overall,” Moon said. “I was struggling because of my poor shot quality and performance in the competition, but as these things passed by, I remembered my parents and shed tears.”
On this day, Moon seemed to be pushed out of the competition with consecutive bogeys at the beginning, but he later garnered five birdies and became the winner in a fierce competition that was tied for the lead with five players. “I was so nervous that I ate a piece of bread and went to the competition. I watched the tee shot on my way to the rough, and I thought I could make up for it because I’ve done it a lot so far,” Moon said, reflecting on the early crisis, “I’ve never seen the leaderboard before today, but the gallery informed me that I can win if I finish this hole well with the last hole left. When I went up on the green and saw the leaderboard, I was so surprised that it was a two-shot lead.” He also recalled the overwhelming situation.
Moon Jung-min, who won 180 million won in prize money by winning this competition, surpassed 300 million won in prize money for the season and jumped to 21st place in prize money. This is a further improvement compared to the failure to maintain the seed in the two seasons after his debut, ranking 75th and 90th, respectively.
“As the driver’s distance is far away, I intensively trained to send the tee shot accurately ahead of this season. I tend to get into a rush of rhythm when I’m nervous, but I practiced swing rhythm a lot to create a consistent swing,” Moon said. “I participated in the competition with the determination to focus on protecting the fairway again. There were holes where I had OB, but I was able to achieve a good result of winning because I followed the fairway well.”
Moon Jung-min’s goal, who achieved his first desperate victory, is to win the remaining championships once more. “When I saw long hitter (Bang) Shin-sil or (Yoon) winning the championship, I was also in a hurry because I couldn’t win a long shot,” he said, adding, “I think I will be able to play with confidence and peace of mind by winning this competition.”
“Golf means so much to me that I am most tired when I cannot play golf, and I am happiest when I can play golf well. I want to become a steady and sincere player in the future,” said Moon Jung-min, who postponed his personal questions to his management company.
