“20-year-old prospect without first-team experience” Chelsea’s reason for signing a six-year contract
Why would Chelsea give a 6-year contract to a 20-year-old defender with no record of first-team appearances?
Chelsea are close to signing a long-term contract with defender Levy Colwill, who has returned from two years on loan.
Chelsea have embarked on a major overhaul of their squad under manager Mauricio Pochettino this summer. In particular, a large number of key players with contracts with less than two years remaining are being sorted out.
However, manager Pochettino was adamant that he could not be sold. The main character is the 20-year-old center back Colwill.
Colwill developed in Chelsea’s youth team from 2011 to 2021. He was the youth team’s top prospect. But he had no place in the star-studded Chelsea first team. He spent one season on loan at Huddersfield Town and then Brighton.
Last season, Brighton showed outstanding performance and received attention from several big clubs. However, manager Pochettino started to protect Colwill, saying that he must be included in his season plan unconditionally. Despite not playing a single first-team game for Chelsea, manager Pochettino appreciated his potential.
And the team situation was also created in favor of Colwill. Wesley Popana was out due to a serious knee injury. Right now, he is being discussed as a candidate for the center back for the opening game against Liverpool. He only appeared in 2 out of 4 pre-season games, but this is not because coach Pochettino did not give him a chance, but because he has been playing in the U-21 European Championship, he is physically considerate.
The Athletic reported that Chelsea had convinced Colewill that his future was at Stamford Bridge, and that the two sides had verbally agreed to a six-year deal.
Chelsea are desperately looking for a centre-back after Popana’s injury. AS Monaco Axel Disassi is a strong candidate. It’s unclear if Colwill will be able to start right away if Disassi comes along, but in any case, it seems very likely that he will play an important role in the defensive line for the new season. A centre-back who can use his left foot well is hard to find even in Europe.
